Spring Wildflowers in Pegg's Back Woods

    • Leader: Doug Lockrey
    • Difficulty: Easy walking
    • Meet at the driveway of the house at the SW corner of concession 7 (Pickering) and Westney Road. Park across the street or beside the road.
    • Betty’s photography and Edge Pegg’s nature expertise were well honed in the woods behind their house. It will be Doug’s pleasure to accompany you on a stroll to examine closely the plant life and the sheer beauty of the spring flowers. Bring any botanical references and your binoculars. This is a combined Pickering Naturalists/Durham Field Naturalists outing.

Prospect Road and the Carden Alvar

    • Meet at the Northview Library parking lot at 4:00 PM or Prospect Road (Eldon 5) and Argyle Road (Victoria County Road 8) at 5:00 PM.
    • We’ll start by checking Prospect Road marsh land then have a picnic meal at the Kirkfield Lift Locks before going to Wylie Road. Weather permitting; we may see Blue Birds, Loggerhead Shrikes, Upland Sandpiper, Wilson’s Snipe, a variety of Sparrows, Nighthawks, prairie wildflowers and listen to lovely Thrush songs as the sun sets.
    • Difficulty: Light walking.
    • Bring water, a picnic meal and insect protection.

Butterfly Walk at Heber Down Conservation Area (north-east corner)

    • Leader: Rayfield Pye.
    • From Hwy 7 (west of Brooklin) go south on Cochrane Street to the small parking lot at the end of the road.
    • Bring water, sun screen and insect repellent.
    • Difficulty: Light walking.

Durham East Cross Forest Conservation Area

    • Meet at the Northview Library parking lot.
    • Join us for our first visit to this new conservation area. Several trails have been set-up by Kawartha Conservation so let’s look forward to some new, pleasant surprises.
    • Bring water, a picnic lunch (if you like) and insect protection.

Leslie Street Spit

    • The Spit is a man-made oasis in an urban desert. We’ll walk the 5-km length of it to see what the change of seasons brings.
    • Don Docherty will lead.
    • Meet to car pool at 8:00 AM at the old GO Station parking lot off Simcoe Street South near the Highway 401 on-ramp. Parking is available at the side farthest from the street. (Don will be at the parking lot at the Spit at 9 AM. Take Lakeshore Boulevard to Leslie Street and drive south to the gate.)
    • Dress to keep comfortable and dry. There is no shelter available.
    • There will be easy but extensive walking. Wear appropriate footwear.
    • Bring a lunch. No food or drink will be available.

In the event of a forecast of bad weather, please check the Durham Rare Bird report for the Friday evening before a trip. In the event of a trip cancellation or re-scheduling, a message will be provided.
